Self-Hosted Search Engine
Summary
Hister is a self-hosted, AGPLv3-licensed search engine that indexes the full text content of web pages and local files you choose to collect. It provides multiple query interfaces (web, terminal, CLI, HTTP API, MCP) and runs as a single binary with no telemetry or mandatory cloud dependency.
Highlights
- Indexes full text content of pages and files, not just titles or URLs, with a rich query language supporting fields, phrases, wildcards, negation, and aliases
- Multiple ingestion methods: browser extensions, file watchers, browser history imports, and site crawlers all feed into a single unified index
- Multiple access interfaces: web UI, terminal, CLI, HTTP API, and MCP for AI assistant integration
- Privacy-first design: no telemetry, no mandatory cloud, single binary server with SQLite or PostgreSQL backend
- Optional semantic search via user-configured embeddings endpoint, keeping even that connection under user control
